A Happy, Healthy Holiday Reminder
|
by Katherine Gillaspy, M.D., Grace Maternity and Women’s Health
It's that time of year again- time for holiday celebrations - shopping, good food, family gatherings!!
It's also the peak of influenza season and a time to take extra precautions for you and your little ones (and future little ones).
When a woman is pregnant her body is working overtime to support that new life, and because of that, pregnant women are especially susceptible to infection and tend to get much sicker than women who are not pregnant. It is important to be careful, make sure that you wash your hands frequently, and use hand sanitizer in circumstances when you cannot wash your hands.
The flu shot is recommended for all pregnant ladies - for you and your baby! Getting the flu shot protects you against the flu. If you breast feed, it also passes along immunity for your baby for those first six months - something especially important for babies who are born during flu season (which lasts from October to May).
For moms, (and other family members of young children), the flu shot is a good idea for you too!! And,as far as your children, please check with your pediatrician about recommendations for flu vaccine.
Flu shots are offered at your local pharmacy or primary care provider’s office, and usually covered by insurance. Get yours today!
Wishing you a Happy (and Healthy!) Holiday!

Hands Off My Belly: The Pregnant Woman's Survival Guide to Myths, Mothers, and Moods
Expectant mothers are virtual magnets for unsolicited advice. Mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, sisters-in-law, new mothers, friends, and even strangers offer what seems to be an endless supply of supposedly authoritative opinions on every aspect of pregnancy. In this engaging, humorous, and very informative book, Drs Shawn A Tassone and Kathryn Landherr - experienced gynecologists, a husband-and-wife team of physicians, and parents of four children - explore the most common superstitions and myths surrounding pregnancy.
