Stress Urinary Incontinence

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is typically the result of weakened pelvic muscles and tissue. These muscles and tissue are often weakened by pregnancy, childbirth, hormone changes, prior surgery or obesity. The result is that the urethra is unable to close tightly enough to hold urine in the bladder. For some women, the condition is brought on with coughing, sneezing or exercise.

Fortunately, there are treatment options available. One such solution is the female “sling” system for stress urinary incontinence. Doctors treat incontinence by surgically placing a narrow strip of mesh material — called a sling — under the urethra to give it a point of support.
